Every morning, the Caliph kills his wife till the next day when he will wed again and begin the cycle anew. When Shahrzad’s best friend is unlucky enough to be one of the his wives, Shahrzad volunteers herself in order to get her revenge. She will kill him for the sake of her best friend and those who have died before her. But when he lets her live to see not just one more day, Shahrzad begins to question why did the girl’s before her even have to die? What more will Shahrzad learn from this ‘evil king’?
Tough start man. Its a really tough beginning trying to get through the set up of everything. Becoming accustom to this world and learning everyone’s names took time. But, by the end, I just absolutely loved everything about this novel.
Shahrzad was my favorite character! One that I’ve never read before. She really reminded me of Celaena Sardothien with her power and her sharp tongue. She really knew exactly what to say in every situation and I really ended up appreciating her (even though she could be really frustrating at times with her literal ability to forget her reason for being there)
The character development in this book was just absolutely stunning. From both Khalid(Caliph) to Shahrzad, I really grew to appreciate both characters and where they had started to where they got to. There is a second book which I will be containing on with.
As I said, this is a definite five-star read for me. I enjoyed every bit of it and that ending left me on the edge of my seat so much that I went and bought the second book. This is a duology luckily so only one more.
My similar recommendation for this novel would be Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard.
