Ava Lee is still recovering from a house fire that devasted her and her entire family. Now, dealing with not only grief but surviving with intense scarring, Ava is being forced to attend school. She must overcome her fears and reach out to others in order to find her way in this new life.
I didn’t like the immediate and constant hatred toward villain. Ava just went with her new friend’s attitude and continued till the very end. I feel nothing was rectified and the poor antagonist was just forgiven after being blamed over and over again. It was quite toxic actually.
I loved Piper and her spunky-ness. This would definitely be me as a character with her bright pink accents to everything. Her struggle was really underrated and I really want people to see this girl in her light. She really melded well with the main character and I’m glad she forced her way into Ava’s life.
This is a definite grief ridden book that make me cry at least twice. It is so resonating and really out there with representation. This story told of how others that may look different from you but they are still the same on the inside.
My similar recommendation for this novel would be How to Make Friends with the Dark by Kathleen Glasgow.
“She conquered her demons and wore her scars like wings.”
