[Book Review] Romanov

Title: Romanov
Author: Nadine Brandes
Pages: 328
Genre: Historical Fiction. Young Adult
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This is a historical Young Adult fiction novel with a magical twist. We follow the famous Romanov family with out character being none other than Anastasia Romanov. This retaking is extremely accurate to the actual events that led up to the Romanov family’s untimely end but with a magical take on the matter. With the use of spells being added in as well as some young love, we are thrust into Russia with an adventure to go on.

Oh No’s

I loved the magical addition, don’t get me wrong, but it took up almost the entire half of the novel. Now, I did rate this book five stars so this is a very small, pathetic oh no. I doubt I could have thought of much better twists.

Yay’s

I am a sucker for accurate historical retellings. The story of the Romanovs and grand duchess Anastasia? Sign me up! And the historical accuracy was on point. At least until half way when there was no way to get around history.

The romance was such a cute yet so stressful. I have never seen so many ups and downs and way to try and make things work. This was a forbidden love and thus had to be hidden amongst secrets and lies. This stressed me out but is so worth it.

Finally,

This is a great historical retelling that stays mostly true to the original. I learned so much about the Romanov family and went on an adventure at the same time.

My similar recommendation for this novel would be anything by Donna Jo Napoli.
