[Book Review] Four Dead Queens

Title: Four Dead Queens
Author: Astrid Scholte
Pages: 413
Genre: Fantasy, Romance, New Adult, Mystery
Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

This is a wonderful Owlcrate exclusive I received in my Owlcrate. It also came with a print of all four queens that I share with you now.

In this mystery novel we follow Keralie, who is a thief who stole from a messenger. This messenger is bent on taking back what was stolen even if it means getting twisted up with Keralie’s employer. Now the two are on the run and it’s (not really) up to them to save the Queens, but they do sort of try!

Oh No’s

I imagined Iris and Corra as dark skinned and I’m gonna keep my [REDACTED] babies that way. Corra is pictured as dark skinned in the print which makes me happy and satisfied.

To be honest, I hated the twist halfway through the novel. I don’t agree with the twist at all but I guess it works to explain the time difference that we see. Its hard to explain while keeping the spoilers to a minimum but just be warned.

Yay’s

Surprise lesbians make me so happy. Even if they were a small part of the novel, they claimed a big part of my heart. I won’t reveal who or what or when, but just be prepared for the happiness (followed by heartbreak).

The back and forth POV of the Queens and Keralie was my favorite part of this book. Following the Queens and what they are actually thinking and feeling was amazing and I loved, obviously, the inevitable deaths of all four of these Queens.

Finally,

I loved this novel. It was a great standalone and I really enjoyed the adventure. Such a good mystery is actually elating and following along with the stress of the characters was enjoyable.

My similar recommendation for this novel would be The Gilded Wolves.

    1. Yes! The feel is very similar! There isn’t a “heist” per se but it’s close to it!

  3. Great review! I’ve seen this book around Instagram a lot recently but hadn’t looked much into it before.
I hadn’t realised it was a stand alone book, or a mystery! It sounds really interesting.
The cover of this book looks so pretty! There seems to be a few YA books around at the moment with crowns on the cover – or is that just me? I’m thinking Holly Black’s ‘wicked king’ series and Red Queen series by Victoria Aveyard (Nothing wrong with it, but it’s fun to notice trends in cover art).
