Where to even begin. Well, obviously, this book is about phoenixes and their riders. A long time ago there used to be those called Phoenix Riders. After the war, those riders with the power to speak with animals were forced to become bond-servants. But there are others who were forced to hide. This book has three main characters. Each with their own stories and problems.

First, we follow Veronyka as she and her sister search for lost Phoenix eggs. Their goal is bond with one and to rise up to join the ranks of Phoenix rider. Next we have Sev, the son of Phoenix Riders who is now forced to lie about his abilities. And finally, we have Tristan. He is our Phoenix Rider apprentice who is also the son of the commander.

Oh No’s

The one downside to this novel is the amount of information that was jam packed into this one novel. I thought it was only info dumping in the beginning but no. This book creates an entire history for these people and it is amazing. Unfortunately, all I wanted was to get to the action so I ended up skimming these parts. But, when I give this book a reread I will definitely want to learn everything I can.

Yay’s

PHOENIXES. This needed to be emphasized. This book is all about magnificent phoenixes. We get to learn everything about them from how they are born, to incubation, teenage years and all the way to adulthood. This book even tackles Phoenix mating habits! It was wonderful learning about these creatures and I can’t wait for the next book.

Finally we have a realistic romance and a romantic subplot of amazingness! Of course, our main character moonlights as a boy for half of the book so we have a Mulan style novel. The boy and girl begin to fall in love but nothing can really happen because this boy starts questioning his intense love. And don’t get me started on the romantic subplot twist of actuality. I won’t spoil it because it doesn’t happen till the end but I loved something finally happening between not main characters. Oh, and no love triangle!

That surprise twist at the end! I recommend reading this book just for the ending. There will be a second book but this one can be satisfying without continuing. Although, the epilogue is so good. It just builds this world up even more and now I’m in it for the long haul.

Finally,

This book is absolutely amazing. I recommend this read if you are interested in going on an adventure. Masquerading as a boy to fight the system is my favorite trope and I hope you all enjoy this book.

My similar recommendation would be Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young.
