[REVIEW] Catching Stars

Cayla Keenan wrote the book Catching Stars and was blessed with having her book included in the May Owlcrate. I also saw the author at Bookcon and from what I could tell she was selling copies and signing them!

To begin: I feel this book really needed to be read one more time before publishing and that should be addressed. This author was great and you can tell she put her all into this story.

Catching Stars is about Jayin, a witch who lives in the outskirts of the kingdom. Soon, her life becomes entageled with Maddix Kell, a guard who mysteriously goes on a killing spree after being posessed by another witch. The two must fight for their lives and later may have to rely on each other just to survive. This story has action, adventure, fantasy with magic and witches included. Also, there is no romance between the two which is so amazing and just a relief to see finally.

Oh No’s

The main problem I had was the editing. There were so many tiny misspellings, there was a paragraph break that never existed before, and some of the pages breaks were off. It just bothered me that such a complete book could’ve had so many mistakes (One was Jayin’s name).

Another thing that bothered me was the only quote they got for the series was both on the front and the back cover. Perhaps they just rushed the publishing but a different quote could’ve been used on the back or front. Although, the cover art is spectacular and honestly made up for the mistakes.

The final Oh No was the need for more detail. The world building needed more desciption. Also, there was a little too much action packed into this book that it all felt like too much filler. In addition, a glossary in the back for all of this random language.

Yay’s

Such a strong opening! I loved Kell’s introduction so much. It was a great way to introduce him and the Jayin followup was great as well. I was instantly sucked into this book and was sad to put it down.

As mentioned before, the lack of romance was amazing. I never felt a romantic pull between Maddix and Jayin and felt so happy when it ended without it.

Altogether, this is a great adventure. I would give this a solid 4 star rating simply because it did feel like way too much filler just to get to the end.

[REVIEW] Upside of Unrequited

First off, I would love to say that this is one of my favorite books that I have ever read. Such a sugar sweet romance with many heart wrenching, jealously driven, and homey moments. It’s a great read for anyone just getting around 16/17. That graduating age and moving on to the next parts of life.

The story revolves around Molly, who’s twin sister Cassie falls for a girl named Mina. The two go through many emotions and love quips to find out who they are to each other and their way in love.

Oh no’s

I hated that most of Molly’s actions were jealousy driven. I understand it was her character but to me it was a bit much.

I also believe that the sleepover they had with the boys was totally unrealistic. Especially since both their moms were home. I would never have a huge sleepover with boys and girls and just not check on them all periodically through the night.

To be honest, those were the only problems I had with this book!

Yay’s

I cannot begin to tell you how much I loved this book. It begins with introducing a character with two moms and a lesbian sister and I thought it was just a story using sexuality as a plot. Boy, was I wrong. This book has the perfect amount of representation and explanations for how love and jealousy works. This book went in depth with the changes that happen not only to us but also to people around us.

I loved Reid’s character! He was my favorite person in the whole book. Every scene he was in, made me so happy. I also loved Mina and Cassie and their relationship together. The buildup and how they are as a couple was written so beautifully. This book had me reminiscing of the early times in my relationship. Ah, young love.

A few quotes I was a fan of:

“WHAT’S UP, CHEESECAKES? I’M JUST GOING TO STARE AT YOU FOREVER.”

Pg. 156

“Late bloomer? Mo, you’re seventeen.”

Pg. 314

Altogether, I absolutely suggest taking the time to give this book a quick read. It will give you the feels to the max, man.

[REVIEW] Remembrance

This was a sweet short story about self-discovery and to not always assume the worst. Remembrance by Mary Monroe follows Beatrice Powell and her mid life crisis in a way. She finds that she is bored in life and seeks comfort in the homeless shelter she volunteers at. When she begins questioning her marriage, her journey takes a deeper turn and Beatrice struggles to find her way.

I got this book as an ARC at Bookcon. On Sunday, we rushed out of the queue line with desire to stand in any and all lines we see. Lo and behold on the tables in front were multitudes of this book just chilling there. Calling my name! Of course, I scooped them up.

One problem I had with the book was that every mother was called mama. This led to some confusion between whether mama had referred to Beatrice or her mother. Another problem was that Beatrice was a little too friendly with every person she met. To me, no one is that nice or outgoing.

Altogether, this was a quick read and it is a great grab-and-go book! I really suggest picking this up if you see it. Also, yes I know the journal says “Let’s Talk YA,” do not be mistaken. This is adult fiction/self-help.

Bookcon Haul (Sunday)

To begin, I was not able to stay for the whole time but it was for as long as I really needed. We were so tired by One o’clock that we welcomed the car that came to pick us up (thanks fiance!). Next year we decided we are going to splurge for the VIP passes! Having that time out area plus getting to go to bag check and not having to worry about losing your place in line is great as well! I definitely am going to try though.

Now on to the HAUL

26 books were obtained at Bookcon in only 3 hours!!

We also survived the Owlcrate line and got a nifty pin out of it! Our main goal for this day was just to see how many books we could grab. Within the first 10 minutes, we got two books that were sitting on tables and two other romance novels signed by the authors! Success

Pictured below are the

4 books that were free and signed and the 2 books that were paid for.

That means we got 20 whole books were free!

Although, my saddest moment was at the NYCC booth (I was wearing the Uniqlo T-shirt and everything!) Super excited, right? 2 people before me get easy-peasy trivia questions that any person would know and then she gets to me!

“What is the longest river in Australia?”

I’m sorry Australians, but being in America and in no way a geography major, this stumped me. It turns out the answer is Murray River but I just felt so cheated out of a shirt 😦

Do note: the Murray River is 1558 miles long and the Nile river is the longest river in the world and it spans 1,300,000 miles long. That is a crazy difference just to point out.

I hope everyone had a great weekend or even just one day at Bookcon and I can’t wait to see all of you again next year! ❤

[REVIEW] Making Friends

It has been a very long time since I have ever received an ARC of a graphic novel! I used to receive them at old NYCC but now they’re very few and far between!

This is a great middle school book about what it is like going on to the next grade and not being in any of your friends classes. Being lonely is never fun but Dany discovers a way to fix that and it’s not how you would think. The author, Kristen Gudsnuk, also wrote the comic Henchgirl, which I have signed somewhere.

Now before you get too interested in getting the Arc before the official one comes out, the pages were only in color up to page 16. Now I hope the actual book is all in color because it really looked great in the color! It felt so real as compared to the white, unfinished pages.

This book got extremely real with the characters it was a little crazy! The story felt a little all over the place near the end. There was a little too much back and forth in the big fight that you kinda wished it would just wrap up already. But other than that, I thought it was a really great book!Really hope they change it up in the final editing processes. But altogether it’s a great middle school book that I’m going to recommend to all my tweeny kids!

[REVIEW] Queen of Shadows

81ncvdOw0QL

This is book 4 of the Throne of Glass series. There is no way to avoid spoilers since at this point the plot is mainly about character development.

You have been warned.

Queen of Shadows was a great fourth book to what could have been the end. Of course, it wasn’t but it was a great full circle journey that I was looking for. Everything from the first book came through and I loved revisiting everything in the series.

Continuing on, I will be listing what I don’t agree with in the story and the things that kept me going through this long and perilous journey.

Oh nos

See, I thought that Rowan and Aelin’s relationship was already established to be completely platonic friendship. So when Aelin started flaunting herself around, and the inevitable hook up, of course I very appalled. I had hopes Rowan would be a strong brother figure but of course that was Aedion’s role. It was all just wishful thinking.

No, I’m so angry Rowan and Aelin got together! I loved Chaol and Aelin so much I can’t stand Rowan! He is just so boring. Oh wow you can breathe wind and stuff. So impressive. Forgive me for my opinions.

I also need something cleared up for me. All magic in Adarlan was stopped, correct? So how was the Valg Prince able to use magic? And how was Dorian’s magic able to show itself? I might have just missed this explanation but this really confused me and kinda bugged me a little.

One more thing. How many Valg princes are there? What, is it some type of hoard mother queen that just keeps pooping out these demon princes to flounce around in other realms? Just seems a little weird to me.

Yays

Manon and Abroxas’ story keeps getting more interesting and at this point, I find them more comforting than Aelin’s constant flirtation with each man.

I, too, crave a little ‘womanly companionship’ and Lysandra’s character was absolutely perfect. My favorite quote in the entire series had me cracking up. Here, let me share it with you.

At dawn, Aedion had burst in, demanding why they weren’t ready to leave—to go home. Lysandra had shifted into a ghost leopard and chased him out. Then she returned, lingering in her massive feline form, and again sprawled beside Aelin. They managed to get another thirty minutes of sleep before Aedion came back and chucked a bucket of water on them.

And finally,

I believe it is safe to assume I will be taking a long break from this series. I was satisfied with the ending and the stress this book gave me was enough for a lifetime. Also considering I took a peek at the length of the next one. HA, that’s not happening for a long time! That book is thicker than a bowl of jelly.

Bookcon Haul (Saturday)

Today was spectacular. Between my co-pilot sweet-talking people, our huge collection of bags, and many countless minutes on fun lines, I think it’s safe to say Bookcon was a success!

The authors were so nice and pleasant. Staff were more than accommodating and offered to help time and again. All of the books offered were high quality and I was so happy with everything that I found!

Now on to the HAUL

img_3420

Everything you see in the picture above was obtained at Bookcon whether it was free or not.

28 total books were acquired not including samplers or previews.

23 books were free with 5 books being paid for.

I won a Tumbler at the LitJoy booth, bought a large bookbeau, and got my picture taken with Spirit, Stallion of the Cimarron. The shirt was from inviting people using the &Ampersand app and inviting 5 friends. I also got 2 stress balls, miscellaneous sticker, tattoos, and pins.

(Pictured below) The 3 books on top were paid and signed. The 8 on the bottom were free and signed.

[REVIEW] How It Happened

img_3308

How it Happened(Michael Kortya) came as a surprise in the mail! I wasn’t expecting anything and had to furiously check my email for an answer. Finding my answer, I had won another giveaway on goodreads! Always join giveaways for things you like, guys. You lose 100% of the chances you don’t take!

This was a mystery crime novel about your typical rogue FBI agent who lays his job and life on the line for a case they believe in. It was your typical run of the mill mystery novel you would want to binge while on the beach but not for really any other time. I urgently just wanted to reach the end but was always distracted by something and not able to.

To note, the cover is absolutely gorgeous and really made me look forward to reading this book. Thank you all for reading and see ya on the next page 😉

Owlcrate Unboxing

img_3338

I finally gave in and purchased an Owlcrate! I bought the month of May’s “Fight Like a Girl” box. When I saw the theme, I was already thinking about purchasing it. But then, they announced that there would be two books this month. I immediately jumped and splurged on this purchase for myself and for the blog. Yes, I bought the box for blog material! The perfect excuse.

Continuing on, buying the box was one thing, receiving it was another story entirely. I currently live in New York City. This means, the mailmen can’t just leave a package at your door. Apparently this also means they can’t deliver it to our apartment. After one Attempted Delivery I tried to reschedule. The next day, nothing. Not a word or an update on the tracking. I then took a trip to the post office and picked it up since our mail man is obviously lazier than life.

Now, I’m not going to go into detail to describe and review this whole box. We all already know this box is awesome! So just sit back and see the 8 items that came included in this box!

  • An Enamel Pin of a book with a quote
  • A bath bomb with the gorgeous scent of Witchhazel
  • A small canvas print with a badass quote
  • Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young (Signed)
  • A handwritten (copied) note from the author and a pin based on the book
  • A colorful bookmark
  • Catching Stars by Cayla Keenan
  • A print of a girl who looks exactly like the cover of Catching Stars
